2. Fight Club

Best movie foreshadowing - Edward Norton and Brad Pitt in Fight Club

Though the film remains chronically misunderstood, no list about foreshadowing would be complete without a mention of Fight Club. It’s a movie that’s practically filled with small visual Easter eggs and clues, and its iconic twist is subtly foreshadowed throughout the entire film. However, there are elements of foreshadowing so subtle that many people missed them entirely.

It’s hard to miss the subliminal messaging of Tyler’s single-frame appearances, but there are lines spoken by the nameless protagonist that practically give the ending away. When punching himself in front of his boss, he says: “For some reason, I thought of my first fight, with Tyler”. Given that it’s later revealed his first fight with Tyler was him beating himself up, the reason is fairly self-explanatory.

It’s honestly a testament to the way Fight Club is crafted that elements of its foreshadowing are so easy to miss. It’s a chaotic movie about people causing chaos, but there’s a meticulously well-considered polish to the film’s foreshadowing that simply makes it some of the best committed to film. There are many scenes in which Fight Club secretly hints at its final twist, and it’s part of what makes it such a compelling piece of cinema.
