7 Dysfunctional Festive Families

3. The Whos – How the Grinch Stole Christmas

Based on the whimsical fantasy story by Dr. Seuss, How the Grinch Stole Christmas is one of the most beloved Christmas movies from recent years, and it also happens to feature a pretty dysfunctional family.

The Who family, who live in Whoville with all the other Whos (they aren’t all related, but the family’s name is the same as the… species? Race? Who even knows what Whos are), love Christmas as much as everyone else in town. Except when their little Cindy Lou begins questioning the spirit of Christmas, her perfectly valid viewpoint is summarily dismissed by her parents.

Cindy Lou actually feels so disillusioned by the way she’s ignored by her parents that she actively seeks out the creature that they’ve been using to frighten her for her entire young life, traversing an actual mountain to do so in the process.

On the surface, the Whos might not seem to be particularly dysfunctional, but when their obsession with Christmas mingles with their refusal to listen to or validate their own child, they actually put her at risk. That’s not the sort of thing that allows you to become Holiday Cheermeister, now, is it?
