1. Christian Bale

Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy remains one of the greatest movie trilogies ever made, particularly in its handling of its main character. Each film explores a different era of Batman’s vigilante career: Batman Begins explores his creation, The Dark Knight sees him understand his true purpose, and The Dark Knight Rises sees him deliver his final act of heroism before retiring into obscurity. The common theme that runs through the entire trilogy is that Batman represents hope, and this is something that Nolan repeatedly comes back to.
The depth of the trilogy’s story makes Christian Bale’s Batman the best to date. There’s an emotional arc alongside the narrative one, and they both subtly explore the dual nature of Bruce Wayne/Batman and his desire to help and inspire the city of Gotham. Bale’s acting helps Bruce and Batman feel distinct from one another while also exploring the deep-seated conflict he faces, with the trilogy’s story bringing it all to a satisfying and logical conclusion.
Everything about Bale’s Batman works: the grounded realism, the use of gadgets and carefully employed martial arts, the two distinct presences that Bale captures in his performance. There’s so much depth to Nolan’s Dark Knight movies that Bale’s Batman feels genuine and tangible, and the journey he takes the audience on is one that breathes new life into the character’s story. The grounded realism of Nolan’s movies makes Bale’s Batman all the more relatable, sacrificing comic accuracy for a harder-hitting story, and that’s a trade-off that not only works brilliantly but also earns Christian Bale the top spot.
