Movie remakes: Marilyn Monroe in Some Like it Hot (1959)

Just because a film is truly iconic, doesn’t mean it’s entirely original. Such is the cast for Some Like It Hot, the 1959 crime comedy that famously starred Marilyn Monroe. It tells the story of two male musicians who disguise themselves as women to hide from a gang of violent criminals.

The truth is, Some Like It Hot isn’t an original film. It’s based on a 1935 French film called Fanfare d’Amour (Fanfare of Love), which tells essentially the exact same story. It concerns a trip to the French Riviera rather than hiding from criminals, but other than that, Some Like It Hot was an like-for-like remake.

Much like other American remakes of international films, Some Like It Hot was bolstered by the power of Hollywood. With Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis, and Jack Lemmon all starring, Some Like It Hot was simply never going to be forgotten. It seems unfair that the original should have been so summarily overshadowed by its remake, even if it was inevitable.
