6. Shaggy – Scoob! (2020)

Worst recast movie characters - Shaggy in Scoob! (2020)

Does this entry out us as Scooby-Doo nerds? Probably. Do we stick by it anyway? Absolutely.

For many years, the character of Shaggy Rogers was voiced by the seemingly inimitable Casey Kasem. Then, in 2002, Matthew Lillard came along and fully embodied the role in live-action, immediately becoming the quintessential Shaggy. In fact, he was so good in the live-action two movies that he then began to voice the character in multiple animated productions, and Lillard has offered us a steady stream of Shaggy ever since. Until, that is, 2020’s Scoob! was released.

For some reason, Lillard wasn’t offered the role, and Scoob! instead featured the vocal talents of Will Forte as Shaggy. Exactly why or how this came about is entirely irrelevant: casting a well known (live-action) comic actor to voice an animated character with a well-loved existing voice is truly baffling. Forte does just fine as Shaggy, but he’s just no Matthew Lillard. Boo.
