7. Flatliners (2017)

Pointless movie remakes - Flatliners (2017)

Let’s be honest: 1990’s Flatliners was hardly a cinematic masterpiece. It may not have been a critical or commercial darling, but it did find a modicum of success as a cult film, which is probably why a remake found its way into theaters in 2017. Replacing the original’s cast of Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, and Kevin Bacon was never going to be an easy feat, making a remake seem like even more a risky venture.

The 2017 movie served as both a stand-alone sequel and a remake of the original in a move that makes about as much sense as it sounds. Despite boasting a cast consisting of Elliot Page, Diego Luna, Nina Dobrev, and James Norton,  the remake was… (forgive the pun) dead on arrival. Shockingly, it was widely panned by critics.

As the original movie was hardly a roaring success, it was always an odd candidate for a remake. As the 2017 movie not only failed to improve upon its predecessor but was actively worse, it’s clear that the film never should have been made. Despite a good cast, it ended up as just another of those pointless movie remakes that immediately faded into obscurity.
