Pointless movie remakes - Jessica Alba in The Eye (2008)

Hollywood has this annoying habit of thinking that any non-American film would be far better if it was remade. More often than not, this is an absolutely terrible idea, particularly when much of the film’s story is rooted in a different culture. 2002’s The Eye, for example, was a Hong Kong-Singaporean horror movie that caused a massive international stir. Naturally, Hollywood got its claw in and remade it.

The result was the 2008 movie of the same name, with Jessica Alba cast in the lead role. Like the original, the film following a young woman whose blindness is cured by a cornea transplant, only for her to be haunted by visions of dead or dying people. Practically everything about the remake was panned by critics, with the consensus being that it was vastly inferior to the original.

Being made just six years after the original, the remake offered nothing new to the story, and simply swapped its setting and cast for American equivalents. It was less atmospheric, with worse acting and direction, and simply didn’t live up to the original movie. In every conceivable way, it was a totally pointless remake.
