Over the years, many icons of Marvel Comics have made it onto the big screen. However, there are also characters who were decidedly more obscure that were adapted for Hollywood, only later making it into the mainstream (and no, we’re not talking about Thor). Marvel’s very own daywalking half-vampire vampire hunter is a perfect example, with every Blade movie adding something to the character’s mythos.
Starting with 1998’s Blade, the character’s tenure on the big screen is relatively simple, but still culturally relevant more than two decades later. The dark nature of the hero and his plight lends itself perfectly to cinematic action with a dose of horror, even though the resulting movies might not perfectly hit the mark. Even so, here is every Blade movie, ranked from worst to best.
3. Blade: Trinity (2004)
Considering all factors of Wesley Snipes’ Blade trilogy, it’s perhaps unsurprising to find Blade: Trinity at the top of this list. Its status as the worst Blade movie is undeniable, as it failed to achieve the same tone as its predecessors while also rehashing multiple plot points. In short, it was both unoriginal and uninspiring. (Sorry, Blade: Trinity.)
The film’s plot revolves around Blade coming face to face with Drake, the basis for humanity’s Dracula legends. The forefather of the entire vampire species proves an especially formidable foe, and Blade teams up with a group of fledgling hunters to put an end to Drake’s plan to hold dominion over all humanity. It’s filled with action, but with an added edge of humor that wasn’t present in previous movies.
It’s not a film without any redeeming qualities, though. Jessica Biel and Ryan Reynolds add some traditional Hollywood star power to proceedings, and its visuals are largely an improvement on its predecessors. Even so, it’s tonally misguided and poorly written (in comparison to the other movies, at least), earning it the accolade of the worst Blade movie.
