6. Lifting Weights Isn’t A Particularly Common Practice

Weightlifting is a great way to keep fit, no one is denying that. However, boxing movies seem to show boxers regularly lifting weights to beef up their muscles and look as powerful as possible, and that’s simply not realistic. It might look great on the big screen, but it isn’t true to life.
Of course boxers are almost always in exceptional shape. They train day in and day out to be as fit and strong as possible. Weight training is actually only a very small part of this for some boxers, with many eschewing it entirely. The fact is, weight training and boxing aren’t always entirely compatible.
The thing with weight training is that it builds muscle. At a certain point, muscle begins to slow a fighter down. Being as lean and muscular as possible isn’t always ideal for a boxer, and many of the world’s best fighters have favored speed over raw bulk. As such, next time you see a movie boxer pumping iron, ask yourself if they really need to, or if it’s all just for show.
