4. Referees Actually Have To Do Their Jobs…

Anyone who’s ever seen a boxing movie knows what a 10-count looks like. In sports cinema, boxers are always being dropped only to dramatically rise to their feet to beat the count. It’s a powerful moment, for sure, but it’s really not that realistic.
The job of a boxing referee is to protect the fighters. Perhaps the most important element of that is knowing when to bring the fight to an end, which usually happens before a count is even issued. Whether a fighter has been knocked out cold or is simply taking too much punishment, fights tend to end in TKO’s rather than 10-count knockouts.
The reason for this is actually pretty simple: boxers aren’t modern day gladiators. Seeing them struggle to get to their feet before the count of 10 only to let them keep fighting would be incredibly irresponsible. As much as boxing is great entertainment, no one wants to see a fighter die in the ring, and so the referees have to do their jobs properly in the real world.
