6. The Umbrella Corporation – Resident Evil (2002)

In the dystopian nightmare we call reality, corporate entities are ALWAYS the villains, but in the dystopian nightmare that is the Resident Evil franchise, the Umbrella Corporation is… well, still the villain, but they aren’t entirely at fault.
In the first film in Paul W. S. Anderson’s Resident Evil film series, a small group of Umbrella Corporation commandos and an amnesiac woman named Alice attempt to contain the outbreak of the T-virus in a secret underground facility. In doing so, they find themselves contending with several deadly traps set by the facility’s A.I.
The biggest issue is that these commandos are actually fighting against the measures designed to prevent the virus reaching the surface. In doing so, they actually allow the virus to reach the world above, and condemn the Earth’s population in the process.
While it’s easy to think of the Umbrella Corporation’s automated facility as the villain, the A.I. was simply trying to protect the world from a deadly bioweapon, and it was actually Alice and her friends that effectively caused the spread of the T-virus. On this occasion (and this occasion only), we’re going to have to side with the sinister corporation.
