7. I, Frankenstein (2014)

For this entry, we’ll apply the term “horror movie” pretty liberally, as I, Frankenstein is primarily a bizarre mash-up of horror, sci-fi, fantasy, and action. As its name implies, it borrows heavily from the mythology surrounding Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, but it goes way, way beyond simply revising the story somewhat. No, I, Frankenstein is a truly unique beast – not unlike the monster it borrows its name from – and its weird premise is more than worthy of a place on this list.
If you have ever found yourself reading the classic gothic horror novel Frankenstein and wishing it had more gargoyles and demons, then your ticket came up in 2014, as that’s exactly what I, Frankenstein offered. Following Aaron Eckhart’s Adam – Frankenstein’s monster as named by the Gargoyle Queen – I, Frankenstein concerns an age-old war being fought between demons and gargoyles in which the titular monster finds himself involved. Yes, it’s every bit as ill-informed and all-out mental as it sounds.
Explaining what makes I, Frankenstein so insane requires no further context, mostly because there is no more to offer. It’s an absolutely mad mash-up of genres, which stylistically is perhaps one of the only ways it truly lives up to the ideas of Mary Shelley’s original novel. I, Frankenstein is a weird and monstrous creation that never should have come to exist, making it the perfect (or not so perfect) way to bring the genre full circle.
