GOOD: James Gunn’s DCU Appointment
1 November 2022
It’s no secret that the DCU (or the DCEU, as it was previously known) has had more than its share of problems. With controversies surrounding several of the key figures behind the scenes of the franchise and several of its films proving divisive at best, it’s a cinematic universe that has been struggling since its very beginning. Factoring in the additional turbulence stemming from Discovery’s acquisition of Warner Bros., 2022 was shaping up to be one of the worst years for the DCU to date.
After the success of James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad in 2021, it was clear there was some hope for the franchise’s future. That’s why the announcement of Gunn’s appointment as co-head of DC Studios (alongside Peter Safran) proved to be such exciting news: it marked a shift toward a much more hopeful future for the long-suffering franchise. After the death of the Snyderverse, Gunn’s irreverent style could well save DC’s cinematic future.
Of course, time will tell whether this was actually a good surprise or not. There is an incredibly vocal contingent of fans who are openly opposed to Gunn’s appointment as the co-head of DC Studios, particularly after a number of shows and movies were swiftly axed after he was instated. Still, it was one of the most shocking pieces of news out of Hollywood in 2022, and for better or worse, it’s changing up the DCU.
