1. Blade Runner (1982)

Could it have been anything else? When it comes to the best sci-fi movies of the ’80s, one film stands out above all others. Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner combines sci-fi, action, noir, and thriller all in one tightly-written film. It’s a cinematic masterpiece from start to finish, and one of the greatest films ever made.
Blade Runner follows Rick Deckard, a cop tasked with hunting rogue synthetic humans known as replicants. Set in L.A. in a dystopian future (technically past now), Blade Runner is one of the most atmospheric and immersive films ever to exist. There exists at its heart a question of ethics, one that forces the viewer to consider what it means to exist and what that existence is truly worth. It’s quietly poignant, and it’s all wrapped in a delightful sci-fi package.
Quantifying what makes Blade Runner the best sci-fi movie of the 1980s is harder than it seems. Even so, it’s obvious that no other film quite beats it. It has a unique quality that to this day has, ironically, never quite been replicated, and it stands as perhaps the greatest example of sci-fi cinema ever crafted.
