2. The Thing (1982)

Best Sci-Fi Movies Of The '80s - Kurt Russell as MacReady in The Thing (1982)

The Thing is the best sci-fi horror film ever made. A bold claim, perhaps, but we stand by it. Directed by the legendary John Carpenter, The Thing follows a group of researchers in Antarctica who encounter a hostile alien lifeform. They soon learn that the being has the ability to perfectly replicate its victims, making it impossible to safely distinguish human from Thing.

As the Thing slowly takes over the researchers’ base, the film builds an air of paranoia. By the time The Thing‘s third act comes around, it’s impossible to dispel the tension, driving the viewer to the edge of their seat time and time again. It’s an unforgettable experience, and it’s so well-made that it remains just as good to this day.

Even after four decades, The Thing‘s ending is hotly debated. Widely regarded one of the best movie endings of all time, The Thing ends on a cruelly ambiguous note. If its ending doesn’t still torment you from time to time, you obviously weren’t watching close enough.
