3. Texts With Teacher – The Edge Of Seventeen (2016)
Though it’s far too heartfelt to be the sort of laugh-a-minute comedy that populates the rest of this list, coming-of-age comedy drama The Edge of Seventeen features a scene so monumentally awkward that it simply needed to be included. Seventeen-year-old Nadine (Hailee Steinfeld) likes classmate Nick, and after her relationships with her closest friend and brother become strained, she writes an explicit text to her crush. Relatively innocent, right?
After realizing it’s inappropriate, Nadine then accidentally sends the text. It’s the sort of nightmare moment we all dream about, but it gets worse. Panicking, she seeks out her teacher Mr. Bruner (Woody Harrelson) – a stand-in father figure of sorts – for reassurance. He tries to calm Nadine down, and starts reading the text out loud to assuage her fears that her life is ruined. Horrified by her words, he continues to read out loud as it slowly dawns on him just how explicit Nadine’s message was.
Accidentally embarrassing ourselves to someone we like is bad enough, but The Edge of Seventeen takes it further. It has Nadine’s sexual proclivities revealed to her teacher in a scene that’s just about as awkward as they come. Honestly, we still feel uncomfortable every time we think about it.
