8. Drag Me to Hell (2009)

Sam Raimi’s anticipated return to the horror genre after his Spider-Man trilogy was 2009’s Drag Me to Hell.
Drag Me to Hell was lauded by critics, and glowing reviews can be found across the internet. The film even has a 92% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, although its audience score tells a different story entirely.
Rave reviews notwithstanding, Drag Me to Hell is, generally, a pretty silly film. Its horror mostly consists of 3D-enhanced jump scares and numerous gross-out moments, and although there are obviously much deeper themes at work in the film’s narrative, it’s just simply not as good as its reviews.
Drag Me to Hell is an entertaining film, but it hardly stands out from the pack. It certainly isn’t deserving of the praise heaped upon it, and with 3D long since falling out of fashion, Drag Me to Hell just feels like a campy attempt to capitalize on the technology in order to wring extra scares out of film that really isn’t that scary.
