10 Wild Movie Fan Theories So Crazy They Could Be True

1. The Shining Proves That Stanley Kubrick Faked The Moon Landing

Less a fan theory about a film’s plot and more a conspiracy theory involving a film, this one is perhaps one of the strangest theories out there, but many believe that Stanley Kubrick used The Shining as a means of confessing his involvement in faking the moon landing.

The basis for the theory involves 2001: A Space Odyssey releasing a year before the moon landing, but there are a number of “clues” in the film to Kubrick’s apparent involvement in faking of the historic moment. These include various visual references to Apollo 11 – the rocket is shown on Danny’s jumper at one point, and the Overlook Hotel’s patterned carpet vaguely resembles Apollo’s launch pad.

Apparently, changes made from Stephen King’s source material also constitute evidence supporting the theory. Examples of this include the changing of the prominently featured Room 217 to Room 237. This is supposedly a reference to the distance between the Earth and the moon (237,000 miles), which is a stretch of a similar distance.

This theory is extremely flimsy but there are some hilariously deep attempts to validate it from those who believe it, and that makes it more than a little interesting. It might be the most ridiculous on this list, but it’s the most entertaining.
