8 Annoying Movie Plot Holes

4. The Dark Knight Rises (2012) – Presentable Policemen

Gotham police in The Dark Knight Rises fighting Bane

Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy is rightly considered one of the best Batman adaptations of all time. However, the final entry, 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises, features one particular narrative element that’s often subjected to ridicule for its utter ridiculousness: Gotham City PD marching their entire police force into the sewer and getting caught in an obvious trap. The officers are trapped in the tunnels for months, and although the film explains their survival by showing supplies being lowered to them, there are certain plot holes that result from their dumb movie decision.

After being freed from the tunnels, Gotham’s police force immediately mobilizes against Bane. However, even after spending months trapped in a smelly tunnel with no sunlight and a distinct lack of running water (at least, clean running water), the officers all appear presentable, healthy, and clean-shaven. When inspected closely, this not only makes no sense, but it’s actually vaguely offensive to the audience.

The officers in question actually look so healthy that we should maybe consider funding research into the benefits of spending months cowering in the dark without showering, because it clearly had a positive effect on Gotham’s police force. That they can emerge physically and mentally capable of immediately fighting back is particularly far-fetched, and it also defies all logic. They should have crept out of the darkness looking like an army of Gollums, and the smell of them alone should have been enough to drive Bane and Talia al Ghul out of Gotham.
