Rotten Tomatoes: 74%

It’s not often that spoof movies have a genuine impact on the genre they’re spoofing, but it does happen. Just take Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, a parody so cutting that musical biopics took over a decade to recover. Starring John C. Reilly as the fictional musical superstar Dewey Cox, Walk Hard most directly spoofed the Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line. However, it didn’t stop there.

For the entirety of its runtime, Walk Hard ripped apart the conventions of the biopic genre. It featured needless cameos from historical figures (played by all manner of brilliant comedic talents), excessive drama, and original music. The Office star Jenna Fischer appeared alongside Reilly, from a script co-written by Judd Apatow and director Jake Kasdan.

In many ways, Walk Hard spoofed biopics so well that there was a noted decline in the genre. Even years later, movies like Elvis and Rocketman can’t be watched in quite the same way, all thanks to Walk Hard‘s biting comedy. It’s this legacy that truly cements the film’s status as one of the best spoof movies ever made.
