From one musical spoof to another, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping is perhaps an unexpected entry on this list. Despite the fact that it passed quickly into relative obscurity, it remains a biting satire of the modern music industry. It’s perhaps not a spoof in the strictest sense, but it is delivered in a mockumentary format, which roughly fits the bill.
From the minds of The Lonely Island, Popstar stars the trio of Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, and Akiva Schaffer. It follows the fictional superstar Conner4Real (Samberg), who finds global stardom after splitting from his band. It chronicles his decline and eventual resurgence, with a staggering amount of musicians and celebrities appearing as scripted talking heads throughout.
At its heart, Popstar is a scathing indictment of the modern music business and celebrity culture. In spite of that, it never feels mean-spirited, and uses a number of SNL stars to bolster its comedic power. It also features a handful of brilliantly-written original songs, helping it stand out as a truly special spoof in practically every way.
