8. Hulk

Mark Ruffalo as Hulk in the MCU

Often used for comic relief within the MCU, the Hulk is actually something of a tragic figure. Dr. Bruce Banner was one of the world’s leading scientists and experts on gamma radiation until he inadvertently created Hulk, his superpowered alter-ego. The big, green, smash-happy being is often presented as a separate entity from Banner, with the two often fighting for control of his body.

Banner is forced to go through life staying calm and level, as an increased heart rate typically leads to Hulk’s appearance. However, the way that Hulk affects Banner’s life is just half of the hero’s tragic existence, because the gamma-infused hero has thoughts and feelings of his own. In many ways, the two entities strongly dislike one another, meaning that Banner/Hulk is constantly at war with himself.

His powers mean that he can never life a normal life, and often causes more destruction than he’d like. It also pushes others – even fellow heroes – to judge him prematurely. In essence, being the Hulk makes Bruce Banner’s life very lonely indeed.
