7. Superman

Christopher Reeve as Superman in flight in Superman (1978)

On paper, Superman has it all. He has a set of superpowers that any hero would envy, and very few weaknesses. Even so, he’s still one of the most tragic movie superheroes there is.

As the Last Son of Krypton, Superman is one of the last surviving members of his race. Though he was raised among humans, he can never truly be one of them, as he’s forever set apart by his remarkable powers. Beyond that, much of humanity reveres him as the world’s foremost hero, putting a weight of responsibility on Superman’s shoulders that would be hard for anyone to bear.

There are other ways that Superman’s life could be described as tragic, but many of them are overly complicated. For example, delving into the specifics of how his various powers affect him (super hearing, speed, and strength, in particular) highlights that everyday life must be difficult for the Kryptonian, but it’s ultimately a moot point. In practically every sense, Superman’s life simply isn’t as great as it appears to be.
