4. Gremlins (1984)
1984’s Gremlins remains one of the best Christmas movies of that decade. It’s by far one of the most lasting Christmas horror movies, and bears the telltale stamp of both Steven Spielberg and Chris Columbus. Unfortunately, in spite of its very cute mogwai character Gizmo, Gremlins isn’t suitable for kids.
On the surface, it appears to be the perfect family-friendly movie about mischievous little creatures and an adorable festive pet. However, thanks to it being released before the introduction of the PG-13 rating, Gremlins‘ more horrific moments were shown to children younger than intended. For those not in the know, it features many people being viciously murdered in gruesome and hilarious ways.
The clear merchandising potential of the film and its seemingly innocent premise hide Gremlins‘ true nature. As much as it may be a delightful festive comedy, it’s also a horror movie, and not one that’s at all suitable for a young audience. It’s perhaps the Christmas movie most likely to give nightmares to kids, and therefore not one for a festive family movie night.
