4. Scary Movie 3 (2003)

Simon Rex, Anna Faris, and Charlie Sheen looking scared in Scary Movie 3 (2003)

Scary Movie 3 was an experimental shift for the franchise. Moving away from traditional horror/slasher spoofing, it tried to emulate psychological horror. The result was… not particularly successful.

Primarily a send-up of Signs and The Ring, Scary Movie 3 also featured a number of other parodies. Perhaps the strangest was its early scenes written as an homage to 8 Mile, introducing new characters to the franchise in the weirdest way possible. It starred Charlie Sheen and Simon Rex alongside the returning Anna Faris and Regina Hall, with Anthony Anderson, Kevin Hart, and Leslie Nielsen all joining in supporting roles.

The main issue with Scary Movie 3 is its plot (such as it is). The film boasts a number of genuinely funny sequences and moments, but it falls apart due to its incoherent melding of disconnected ideas and stories. As much as there’s a definite comic value, the film is utter nonsense. Even spoofs need to made with some semblance of thought, and Scary Movie 3 doesn’t appear to have been.
