1. Remember Me (2010) – Surprise, It’s 9/11

Dumbest plot twists - Robert Pattinson in Remember Me on 9/11

Remember Me stars Robert Pattinson as Tyler Hawkins, a young man who falls in love with a student from NYU named Ally. The pair’s romance is at the heart of the film, which is for the most part a pretty straightforward romantic drama. However, Remember Me‘s final scene changes everything for the worse.

After his relationship with Ally helps him to finally connect with his father, Tyler heads to his dad’s office to meet him. Then, the camera pans out to reveal he’s in the World Trade Center, and a shot of his sister’s classroom reveals the date: September 11th, 2001. A voiceover explains that Tyler then died in the terrorist attack on 9/11.

It’s an unceremonious and thoroughly unexpected ending, and it drew heavy criticism. Firstly, there’s absolutely nothing in the film that warranted the inclusion of a real-life tragedy in its story. To this end, Remember Me comes off as trying to artificially create drama using real-life events, which is horrifically tasteless in a way that defies all definition. Not only is it cheap and insulting, but Remember Me‘s final reveal doesn’t even make sense, making it the dumbest plot twist of all time.
