2. Serenity (2019) – It Was All A Video Game Made By A Child
Serenity follows fisherman Baker Dill (a ridiculous name for a character) as he is approached by his ex-wife to murder her abusive new husband. It weaves a twisted and mysterious tale starring some truly talented actors, with Baker’s mysterious past gradually coming to light throughout. Then it spoils everything with one of the dumbest plot twists ever written.
At the end of the movie, it’s revealed that everything is actually taking place inside a video game. Not just any video game, though: a game created by Dill’s son. All of the characters are in fact AI created to live out a child’s dark fantasy. Yikes.
What makes the twist so awful is that it doesn’t really match the tone of the film at all. Serenity seems to be a serious drama, and then, out of nowhere, it’s given a sci-fi spin. In many ways, it’s a truly nonsensical end to an otherwise interesting film, making the twist particularly dumb.
