5. Cruella De Vil – 101 Dalmatians

Cruella De Vil with Roger in 101 Dalmatians (1961)

Disney movies might be considered family entertainment, but their villains are often incredibly disturbing. Just take 101 Dalamatian‘s Cruelle De Vil, for example: she’s an influential fashion designer who’s about as entitled as they come. She’s used to getting her own way, and will stop at nothing in pursuit of her goals.

So, after learning that the Dalmatian of her former schoolmate Anita has just given birth to 15 puppies, Cruella decides she wants them all. Anita and her husband Roger refuse, because Cruella is just about the creepiest person on the Earth, and she leaves in a fit of rage. Then, she does what any rational person would do: she has someone break in, steal the puppies, and plans to make a coat out of them. Totally normal.

The idea that a person would kill puppies is pretty dark, but it’s Cruella’s drastic decisions that are on trial here. To go from a simple refusal to dognapping and slaughter is a pretty big jump. It sort of makes her the Iosef Tarasov of the Disney universe, except instead of killing one dog, she’s after as many as she can get. Basically, 101 Dalamatians is darker than John Wick. Who knew?
