7. Hancock (2008)

Standalone movies that should have started franchises - Will Smith in Hancock (2008)

In fairness, no one is saying that Hancock is a cinematic masterpiece. It has its issues (one of the biggest being its reliance on overplayed superhero tropes), but it’s still an enjoyable piece of cinema. Starring Will Smith as the titular amnesiac superman, and Charlize Theron and Jason Bateman as the kind couple who take him in and give him a PR overhaul, Hancock is certainly stacked with talent.

The thing about Hancock is that its star power speaks for itself. Considering that all of its main characters survive its story, and it seemingly ends with a sequel tease, the lack of a follow-up is a little disappointing. After all, there was clear potential for more stories in the Hancock-verse.

In terms of being realistic, a Hancock franchise might not have been the highest-earning out there, but it’s not an idea without potential. As the years since its release continue to pass by, any actualization of a sequel seems increasingly less likely, and that’s fine. Even so, Hancock was another of those movies that could easily have started one of the superhero genre’s most entertaining franchises.
