6. District 9 (2009)

Sharlto Copley as Wikus in District 9 with an alien

District 9 in many ways is a modern day fable about prejudice. A sci-fi story about aliens stranded on Earth and forced to live in slums outside of Johannesburg, its narrative is a clear allegory for apartheid. Humanity’s treatment of the “Prawns” is tough to watch at times, but its story is ultimately a rewarding one.

Told through the eyes of Sharlto Copley’s Wikus Van De Merwe, an operative of the South African government tasked with moving aliens on to the next district, District 9 examines both the oppressor and the oppressed. It’s a powerful story by any stretch, but its use of sci-fi elevates proceedings. The addition of body horror aspects and big action set pieces only makes District 9 all the more exciting.

Though talk of a sequel following on from the movie’s perfect ending has run rampant since its release, no such follow-up appears forthcoming. Though District 9 had all the makings of an excellent franchise starter, it clearly wasn’t to be. Wikus’ story is one that countless fans would love to see continued, making it a perfect contender for this list.
