3. The Princess Bride’s Cliff-Climbing & Harry Potter’s Horcrux Hunt

Cliffs Of Moher, County Clare, Ireland

  • Scenes filmed in the same place - Cary Elwes climbing the Cliffs of Insanity in The Princess Bride
  • Scenes filmed in the same place - The cave where Voldemort has hidden a horcrux in Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince

The Princess Bride is a truly iconic fantasy film, and perfectly combines action, comedy, romance, and drama. One of it’s most memorable scenes, set on the imposingly named “Cliffs of Insanity“, stands out as a particularly picturesque moment in the film. The scene in which these cliffs are climbed was shot on location at the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland.

As it turns out, another beloved fantasy film was also shot there. In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Harry and Dumbledore leave Hogwarts to hunt for a hidden horcrux. They arrive at an ominous cave set into sheer cliffs, and if you look very closely, you can still see Westley dangling from the… Okay, maybe not, but they’re the same cliffs.

What makes the shared setting seem more unbelievable is actually the two films’ iconic status. One being a beloved generational classic and the other being part of arguably the most well-known fantasy franchise in modern times makes it seem all the stranger that they share a piece of geographical history. The Cliffs of Moher themselves are incredibly distinctive, but their presence isn’t easy to catch in the context of their respective movies.
