2. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014)
One of the most blatant and memorable sequel teases in recent years came at the end of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and it seems that no such sequel is coming. After the shocking death of Gwen Stacy, it seemed that the story of Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man was over, but the film’s final scene saw Rhino rampaging through New York and Spidey swinging in to the rescue. A credits scene then teased Rhino’s return in a Sinister Six storyline, making The Amazing Spider-Man 3 seem an inevitability.
However, shortly after, Sony and Disney came to an agreement regarding the rights to the character, and he was written into the MCU, this time played by Tom Holland. For a time, it seemed that Andrew Garfield’s days as Spider-Man were done, and that the sequel tease would come to nothing. Then, his version of the character reappeared in Spider-Man: No Way Home via a Multiverse narrative, which proved bittersweet. Though the character returned, it made a sequel seem even less likely.
The Amazing Spider-Man movies were divisive at the time of their respective releases, although time has been kind to them, and they’ve found a much more vocal base of supporters. This has seen a new wave of support for The Amazing Spider-Man 3, making it seem slightly more possible to happen than it once did. However, with Spider-Man’s story in the MCU far from over, it would seem that there’s little point in picking up a dangling thread from a disconnected franchise simply to satisfy a handful of fans.
