1. Power Rangers (2017)

The Power Rangers franchise is far more successful than many people realize. Having been running in one form or another since the 1990s, Power Rangers combines the action of Super Sentai with a decidedly more American story for Western audiences, and the result has been culturally relevant ever since. 2017 saw the franchise rebooted to the modern standards of Hollywood for Power Rangers.

The film serves as an origin story/reboot of Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, and as such it introduces a number of fan-favorite characters reimagined for the big screen. Though reception to the film was mixed, there were initially plans to make a sequel to the film – something teased in a small moment before the credits. This particular sequel tease was incredibly exciting for Power Rangers fans, though, because it promised the introduction of Tommy Oliver (the Green Ranger) – one of the most memorable characters from the show.

The commercial failure of the film led to plans for a sequel to be scrapped, and the rights to the franchise were sold to Hasbro. Another reboot is now reportedly in development, meaning that the chances of seeing the 2017 tease of Tommy Oliver being paid off are practically none. This is actually a shame, as Power Rangers made use of some interesting ideas, and a sequel was an intriguing prospect, but like all the others on this list, it seems that it was never meant to be.
