9 Unintentionally Funny Moments In Horror Movies

2. Mark Wahlberg Needs A Second -The Happening (2008)

Mark Wahlberg as Elliot Moore in M Night Shyamalan's The Happening 2008

In all honesty, the idea that The Happening even exists at all is vaguely funny. Mark Wahlberg’s role as Elliot Moore – a science teacher, of all things – makes it a shining example of a time that an actor was cast in the wrong genre. The film’s premise – plants evolving to weaponize themselves in order to cause mass suicide in humans – is almost as laughable as Wahlberg’s casting. Almost, but not quite.

The Happening is perhaps better known as the M. Night Shyamalan film in which Mark Wahlberg looks consistently confused throughout, and that undermines most of the film’s horror movie credentials right out of the gate. However, there is one scene in particular that stands out as even funnier than any other: the one where Mark Wahlberg just needs a second. With suicides happening all around, Elliot and his group of survivors begin panicking, and the others all look to Elliot for answers (for some reason).

Cue some of Wahlberg’s hammiest acting to date, as he unconvincingly repeats the words “I need a second” over and over in response to the group’s panic. The moment is made hilarious by Wahlberg’s delivery, as well as the fact that he simply looks overwhelmed and more confused than ever. However, the fault here is as much with the writing as it is with Wahlberg’s performance – it’s a poorly written and executed scene that comes off as much funnier than intended.
