7. Vomit – The Exorcist (1973)
William Friedkin’s 1973 classic The Exorcist is often considered the quintessential horror movie. The supernatural story of a demonic force possessing an innocent young child has become truly iconic, as has Linda Blair’s performance as Regan MacNeil. To put it simply, The Exorcist is the perfect storm of scary: it has powerful forces beyond human understanding, an innocent child transformed into a monster, and an atmosphere of quiet intensity that lingers after the credits roll.
Of course, there’s not an awful lot that’s funny about an innocent child taken hostage by a demon. There’s even less funny about the majority of the awful things that it does to Regan while in her body. However, there is one moment in The Exorcist that is unexpectedly and unintentionally funny enough to have passed into infamy: the vomit scene.
When Father Karras sits with Regan and attempts to determine the nature of what’s happening to her, the demon taunts him by talking about his late mother. He asks the demon for her maiden name to prove it knows who she is, and after an incredibly tense moment, Karras is simply sprayed with thick green vomit. It’s unexpected (or it was at one point, at least) and releases the mounting tension of the scene in a delightfully disgusting way, making it a rare funny moment in an otherwise terrifying movie.
