1. Jared Leto

Jared Leto as Mark Chapman in Chapter 27

Jared Leto fits so many unflattering Hollywood stereotypes that he’s little more than an easy target, so we’ll avoid poking too much fun at him and instead look at the facts. He is generally a good actor, that much is fair to say, but whether or not he deserves the levels of praise he often receives is debatable. As his method-acting hijinks are more likely to make headlines than his actual acting, the reason that he’s considered overrated is actually pretty clear.

Whether it’s his over-the-top Joker in Suicide Squad or his flimsy performance in Morbius, there are several high-profile examples of bad credits to Leto’s name. His best films are the ones in which he played a smaller supporting role (like American Psycho and Fight Club), and that should go some way toward explaining how overhyped he is as an actor. When it comes to Leto, less is more, and that’s because he seems to take everything too far.

Of course, it’s hard to knock the guy for trying too hard, because all it shows is that he wants to do well. But when it comes down to (reportedly) sending dead rodents and used condoms to your co-stars for the sake of a minor role in a critically panned superhero movie, you should probably take that as a sign that your method acting isn’t serving any real purpose. Leto is an exercise in gimmick over substance, and the performances he’s delivered that are genuinely good are far outnumbered by those that he took way too far.
