4. Marley & Me (2008)
Tagline: “This Christmas, heel the love.”
No one is denying that Marley & Me is a great film. It’s emotional and funny and impossibly heartfelt… but it’s also on this list. That means that it has one of the most awful movie taglines ever written.
“This Christmas, heel the love.” Really? Where to start? First off, the use of Christmas sort of implies it’s a holiday film. It isn’t. Secondly, “heel the love”? Utter nonsense.
Using dog terms to form a pun only really works if it still makes sense. They’ve literally swapped out a word for a command that makes no sense in that context. If the love heels, then it’s been controlled? Stopped? What are they trying to say? It would almost be funny if Marley & Me hadn’t reduced us all to blubbering messes.
