2. Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children (2016)

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (2016)

Maybe not the most obvious choice, but we’re still angry about this one. Ransom Riggs’ Miss Peregrine novels remain a brilliant example of gothic young adult fiction. The film adaptation is a brilliant example of how to thoroughly bungle the source material.

The worst changes to the source material are the most obvious. The black-and-white aesthetic of the books and their photographs was replaced with over-saturated and needless vibrant hues. Certain characters were swapped around, with their powers changed, seemingly for no real reason at all.

The saddest part is that the poor movie adaptation was many people’s introduction to the franchise. Those who hadn’t already read the books would be misled into thinking they told a standard fantasy story, when really they did so much more. Gone was the delicate blend of horror, action, and fantasy, and in its place stood generic Hollywood fluff. We’ll be sticking to the books, in case that wasn’t clear.
