7. What’s Going On With The Pirate Ship In The Goonies?
One of the most beloved movies of the ’80s, The Goonies is a true classic. In many ways, it’s flawless family entertainment, with friendship and adventure at its heart. It also boasts one of the biggest unanswered movie questions there is, one which remains hilariously confusing even decades later.
After discovering the lost ship of the pirate One-Eyed Willy, the Inferno, the Goonies find it positively laden with treasure. However, the villainous Fratellis are also after the treasure, and in the resulting scuffle, the grotto collapses, with the Goonies and Fratellis narrowly escaping with their lives. The film’s final moments show the unmanned Inferno sailing off into the distance. Was the ship sailing itself? Would it eventually crash or would some sort of magic keep it sailing forever? How did it even escape the grotto in the first place?
Silly though the questions may be, they’re doomed to remain unanswered. Imaginative though The Goonies may be, it wasn’t fantastical, so we could probably rule out magic. However, this means that the ship was merely floating away, and eventually would crash into something. And, if that’s the case, what would happen to the treasure? It actually sort of ruins the film’s ending, when you really think about it.
