Is there anything Bill Murray can’t do? He can make us laugh, he can make us cry. He can also apparently make us root for him to become romantically involved with a woman 34 years his junior. In Lost in Translation, that is.
The film concerns the increasingly intimate friendship between Bob (Murray) and Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson). Over the course of the film, the pair bond and repeatedly toy with the idea of getting together. However, it ends with them going their separate ways, only to immediately happen across one another in a busy city street. They embrace, he whispers something inaudible in her ear, then they kiss.
Touching though it may be, the scene leaves just one question in the minds of everyone who watches it: what did Bob whisper to Charlotte? Was it a profession of love? A word of gratitude for their friendship? It’s one of the biggest unanswered movie questions there is, and it seems we might never get an answer.
