1. Was Cobb Still Dreaming In Inception?

Cobb's totem spinning at the end of Inception (2010)

Another Christopher Nolan entry, because apparently the director isn’t a fan of tying up loose ends. Or, in this case, he’s a big fan of ambiguity. To be honest, ambiguity is sort of Inception‘s whole thing. It’s about perception and the fragility of reality, so we probably should have expected at least a couple of unanswered questions.

Inception ends with just one unanswered question, and it’s truly maddening. After escaping his dream-within-a-dream ordeal, Dom Cobb finally makes it home to his estranged children. His totem, which allows him to determine if he’s in the real world or not, is a spinning top. If it stops spinning, he’s awake. In the final scene, though, Dom spins it, then leaves with his children. The film cuts to black before we learn the truth of Dom’s current situation.

The prevailing theory is that the ambiguity is the point. Dom no longer cares if he’s awake or asleep; he has his children and he’s finally at peace with himself. To us, that feels like a bit of a cop-out, but it’s still enough for us to feel better about one of the biggest unanswered movie questions of all time. We can live with it, but we still aren’t happy. Christopher Nolan, answer our emails, please.
