When you delve into the specifics of its creation The Nuttiest Nutcracker beings to make a modicum of sense. Taken as an abstract idea, though, it’s one of the weirdest Christmas movie premises of all time. Guess which of those angles we’re going to pursue?
The Nuttiest Nutcracker follows a group of anthropomorphic fruits and vegetables as they attempt to help the Nutcracker’s army place a star on top of a Christmas tree. This is all being done with the intention of preventing an evil rodent from ruining Christmas. It’s loosely based on the opera The Nutcracker, except it has actual nuts in it.
Any film that features living nuts and legumes fighting rodents immediately shoots into weird territory for us. The general idea of making opera accessible to children by replacing the characters with fruit and vegetables seems even weirder in our book. Start to finish, it’s hard to understand why The Nuttiest Nutcracker was made, but hey – it was the ‘90s, and the bar was much lower then.
