Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness (2022)
After the events of WandaVision, every MCU fan felt some amount of sympathy to Wanda Maximoff. However, her grief combined with the corrupting influence of the Darkhold saw her become an out-and-out villain for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, with the former Avenger seeking to kill young America Chavez to take her Multiverse-hopping ability. This was all in pursuit of travelling across realities to find one in which the children she conjured in the Westview Hex exist for real.
When Doctor Strange confronts Wanda and tries to reason with her, he explains to her that her children weren’t real, and that she’d “made them with magic”. Wanda simply replies: “that’s what every mother does,” with a wan smile that’s unexpectedly creepy. The moment demonstrated the extent of Wanda’s grief-stricken madness, but the unsettling execution of the line made it cringe-inducing for all the wrong reasons.
