4. Laughing At Doctor Octopus

Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)

Zendaya as MJ, Tom Holland as Peter Parker and Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds in Spider-Man: No Way Home

On the whole, Spider-Man: No Way Home was one of the best movies in the entire MCU. That said, it still featured one or two moments worthy of a cringe, particularly in the way its young characters are written. The dynamic between Peter Parker, MJ, and Ned Leeds might be one of the core attractions of the film, but it’s still especially off-putting when their interactions don’t feel organic. One such moment comes shortly after the Multiverse villains begin appearing, and Spider-Man has already taken custody of Doctor Octopus.

When the villain introduces himself, the three teens spend a few moments chuckling at his name and mocking him. It’s such a juvenile moment that doesn’t feel at all at home in the film or in the wider MCU, with its lazy jokes coming off as little more than the cheapest possible laugh. What’s worse, even the actors clearly don’t find it funny, making it an all-round cringe-worthy moment.
