1. Werewolves Within (2021)

Sam Richardson in Werewolves Within (2021)

Werewolves Within is an interesting film to sit at the top of this list. A very loose adaptation of the video game of the same name, the 2021 film stars Sam Richardson as a newly-appointed small town Sheriff dealing with mysterious animal attacks. Despite being a smaller production than the other video game movies on this list, it’s still arguably the best.

To understand what makes Werewolves Within so good, look no further than Rotten Tomatoes. Enjoyed by critics and audiences alike, it’s the highest-rated video game movie of all time. Interestingly, this isn’t because it’s faithful to the source material, but that it takes the game’s general idea and makes it into a great movie.

Blending comedy and horror isn’t easy, especially when you’re working from pre-existing source material. However, Werewolves Within does so perfectly, telling a story that’s as gripping as it is funny. It’s simply a very well-made and well-written movie, and the fact that it’s based on a video game seems inconsequential. That might make it strange pick for best video game movie of all time, but the numbers really don’t lie.
