8. Assassin’s Creed (2016)

Best video game movies: Ariane Labed as Maria and Michael Fassbender as Aguilar de Nerha in Assassin's Creed (2016)

It’s no secret that the Assassin’s Creed franchise has been through its share of ups and downs. After its initial popularity had faded, a film adaption was finally made, releasing in 2016. Assassin’s Creed stars Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, and Jeremy Irons, and is a loose adaptation of the franchise.

With a story that runs adjacent to the games, Assassin’s Creed managed to be both original and relatively faithful. This allowed it to offer fan service while telling a new story, which has often proved difficult for other video game movies. Assassin’s Creed was able to toe the line between what it was expected to be and what it needed to be, which deserves recognition.

With solid action sequences and plenty of moments that subtly connect to the games, Assassin’s Creed was far better than anyone expected. Though it was far from a critical darling, it was still impressive in its scope and ambition, and achieved far more than many cared to admit. It’s hardly Oscar-worthy, but in the context of video game movies, it’s one of the better ones.
