7. Ratchet & Clank (2016)

Making animated films based on games is an interesting practice. It’s a little risky, because there’s always a chance that it will feel like a feature-length cutscene, but sometimes it works. Ratchet & Clank is, quite simply, an example of the latter.
Animation was really the only decision, give the style and tone of the games. Quirky family-friendly sci-fi games don’t really translate to live-action, especially when none of the main characters are human. This evidences exactly what makes the Ratchet & Clank movie work: it understood the nature of the games it was adapting.
With a tongue-in-cheek edge and plenty of levity to be found, Ratchet & Clank never needed the big, serious blockbuster treatment. No, what it needed was a smaller, well-considered movie, and that’s exactly what it got. By being as faithful as possible to the tone of the original games without sacrificing a little originality, Ratchet & Clank proved itself one of the best video game movies out there.
