4. Resident Evil (2002)

On paper, the Resident Evil video game franchise seems ripe for adaptation. With a story that follows the outbreak of a zombie virus that threatens to consume the planet, it would seem that Resident Evil should translate perfectly to big Hollywood blockbusters. Unfortunately, this really hadn’t proven the case – except, that is, for 2002’s original adaptation, Resident Evil.
With an entirely new protagonist designed just for the movie, the film concerns the outbreak of the virus itself. Set in an Umbrella Corporation facility, it follows a group of survivors attempting to escape the various dangers that have broken free. Obviously, this lends itself perfectly to the action-heavy survival horror that the games are known for.
Milla Jovovich stars as Alice, and delivers an incredibly acrobatic action performance. It really takes the Resident Evil mythos and explores it unabashedly, which works brilliantly to bring the franchise to life. It also spawned five sequels, which should indicate what a solid video game movie it really is.
