2. Sonic the Hedgehog (2020)

If knowing what your audience wants is a key part of video game movie success, Sonic the Hedgehog is perfect proof. The franchise has been a staple of countless generation’s entertainment, so the film adaptation needed wide appeal while still being sutiable for a younger audience. Luckily, Sonic has always had an inherent knack for inoffensive comedy.
Levity is by far one of 2020’s Sonic the Hedgehog‘s greatest assets. With Jim Carrey as the film’s antagonist and comedian Ben Schwartz voicing Sonic, it’s a masterclass in video game adaptation. As it honors the source material without dissolving into endless fan service, the resulting film is accessible for pretty much all audiences.
There’s very little not to enjoy about Sonic the Hedgehog. It strikes an excellent balance between adapting existing ideas and embracing originality, and thus works on practically every level. It’s fast, it’s funny, and it’s undeniably Sonic.
