7. The Fellowship of the Ring – The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy

The Fellowship of the Ring in The Lord of the Rings

Luck in fantasy worlds is a funny thing. Luck in The Lord of the Rings is an even funnier thing. And, when it comes to the Fellowship of the Ring, luck is practically a given. Unless you’re Boromir, that is.

It’s made very clear to the members of the Fellowship that their quest is effectively a suicide mission against the most powerful evil in the land. Despite this, 8 out of 9 survive. (Even though Gandalf sort of dies and then comes back, but he’s a wizard so it doesn’t count. See? Fantasy and luck really do have a weird relationship.)

There are countless examples of this uncanny luck, only some of which can be attributed to magical powers or Frodo and Sam’s generally unexplained ability to resist evil. Time and again, the Fellowship defy the odds to not only keep Sauron from recovering his Ring, but to complete their quest and live to a ripe old age. The film even did away with some of the darker aspects of the book’s ending, so they were sort of doubly lucky, when you think about it.
